Biography

John Updike was a prolific American author known for his compelling depiction of middle-class American life. He was born on March 18, 1932, in Reading, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Harvard University in 1954. Updike gained widespread recognition for his series of novels featuring the character Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, which included "Rabbit, Run" (1960), "Rabbit Redux" (1971), "Rabbit is Rich" (1981), and "Rabbit at Rest" (1990). This series earned him multiple awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes for fiction. In addition to the Rabbit Angstrom series, Updike wrote numerous other novels, short stories, poetry collections, and essays.
