Elizabeth Peters was the pen name of Barbara Mertz, an American author who achieved great success with her popular mystery series featuring the fearless Victorian archaeologist Amelia Peabody. Born on September 29, 1927, in Illinois, Peters earned her PhD in Egyptology from the University of Chicago and used her expertise to bring a rich sense of history and authenticity to her novels.
